How the Rangers won the World Series over the Diamondbacks in Game 5

Nathan Eovaldi would like a 1-2-3 inning. He’d like every inning to be a 1-2-3 inning. He’d like a career filled with them, over 600 starts, from start to finish, 16,200 up, 16,200 down, without a batter ever reaching base. What a career that would be.

But, more specifically, Eovaldi would like a 1-2-3 inning in Game 5 of the 2023 World Series. He would really, really, like one of those. Through five innings, however, he most certainly does not have a 1-2-3 inning. I don’t know about him, but it’s stressing me out, and I don’t have a rooting interest in this game.

So far, it’s working. Dude is like the Road Runner running off the cliff and refusing to look down. If he doesn’t look down, the physical laws of the universe don’t apply. The Diamondbacks are 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position, but it feels like they’re 0-for-18.

Eovaldi is still looking for a 1-2-3- inning, but until then, he’ll have to settle for a bunch of 1-2*-3*-4-5*-6 innings, with all of the asterisks leading to footnotes about the baserunners who could have made a difference but didn’t.
